BRAIDWOMAN™ is a series of film activations by Contemporary Sculptor Joanne Petit-Frère and JoGoesWest Studios™. These exclusive, one-time screenings offer a distinct approach to the performance and media encounters normalized to both viewer and artist. Petit-Frère draws from her Hospitality Leadership experience hosting and later managing within NYC’s fine-dining and upscale-casual landscape, including Newark Liberty International Airport’s Saison, then NYC’s Upstate (East Village), Her Name Was Carmen (West Village), Sant Ambroeus (Soho), Canary Club (Bowery), Kappo Masa (Upper East Side), Kamasu (Hudson Yards) and Sunday Hospitality (Greenpoint, Brooklyn).

Through fluid, non-narrative — and, at times, narrative -- cinema, she weaves together her studio process and the presentation of completed works. Slowly, deliberately, the series unveils Joanne’s long-awaited sculptures from the BRAIDWOMAN™ trilogy, including Braided Sanctuaries™ and BraidCora™.

Emerging from years of recalibration in Oklahoma, the series unfolds through virtual and in-person activations.

Material elements, while theoretically cored - utilizing braided hair, sonic architecture, literary accents, archival resonance, and sculptural performance - Joanne’s now monthly feature-length film activations are rooted in deep practice with diasporic memory and discovery, informed by cultural legacies of Ayiti, Taíno, Arawak, and West African ancestral lineages. The work is further shaped by the First Nations lands of Oklahoma, where Joanne’s studio practice also continues to evolve.

This series is presented in acknowledgement of the Kaurna people, Traditional Custodians of the Adelaide Plains in South Australia, where BRAIDWOMAN™ premiered internationally on March 3, 2026 for Adelaide Fringe Festival; honoring Elders past and present, as well Youth gone too soon - while recognizing the enduring sovereignty of these distinct lands.

Joanne’s work continues to evolve through recurring cinematic work, sculpture, hospitality leadership, and live activation.
