BRAIDWOMAN™ is a series of short film activations by Contemporary Sculptor Joanne Petit-Frère and her studio moniker, JoGoesWest. These timed digital portals offer witnessing, into her evolving studio process and completed works; unveiling through cinematic form Joanne’s long-awaited sculptures from her baked-in series, Braided Sanctuaries™ & BraidCora™.

Emerging from years of recalibration in Oklahoma, the series unfolds across both virtual and in-person activations.

Materially and theoretically cored by braided hair, sonic architecture, literary accents, archival resonance, and sculptural performance, Joanne’s weekly cinematic activations are rooted in diasporic memory and informed by the cultural legacies of Ayiti, Taíno, Arawak, and West African ancestral lineages. The work is further shaped by the First Nations lands of Oklahoma, where Joanne’s studio practice continues to evolve.

This series is also presented in acknowledgement of the Kaurna people, Traditional Custodians of the Adelaide Plains where the series internationally premiered & activated on March 3, 2026 in South Australia. This series also honors Elders past and present, while recognizing the enduring sovereignty of these collective lands.

Joanne’s works continue to evolve through recurring cinematic work, installation, and occasional live activation.
